(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Richard G. Lugar (Ret.), President and Chairman of the Board of The Lugar Center, applauded the passage of global food security bills in both the House (H.R. 1567) and Senate (S.1252). “I congratulate House and Senate leaders on passing this important bipartisan legislation that authorizes Feed the Future,” Lugar said. “Investing in agriculture benefits all farmers, here and abroad, and will help to significantly reduce poverty.”

Senator Lugar was a vocal supporter of international agriculture development programs during his tenure on both the Senate Foreign Relations and Agriculture Committees. He was the author of the Global Food Security Act of 2009, written after the price spikes of 2007 and 2008 forced hundreds of thousands more people to go hungry. Global Food Security is now a major focus of The Lugar Center.

“I am particularly impressed that the Agriculture Committees in the House and Senate were able to work with the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to craft legislation to support U.S. leadership on food security and food aid programs,” Lugar noted.
