Lugar Diplomacy Series hosts former Federal Reserve Bank President Richard Fisher
The fate of NAFTA, the impact of the new tax cuts, and the future course of interest rates and the global economy were among the many topics covered by former Federal Reserve official Richard Fisher at the Lugar Diplomacy Series event on January 30, 2018.
Fisher, a former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, and a former Treasury official and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, spoke to more than a dozen ambassadors and other diplomats as the eighth speaker in the Lugar Diplomacy Series.
Former Sen. Richard Lugar, president of the Lugar Center, in his introductory remarks called Fisher “a remarkable public servant and one of the truly original American thinkers of our era.”
From 2005 to 2015, Mr. Fisher served as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Lugar noted, “Throughout that period he was a key figure in the debates over U.S. and global monetary policy. He became well known for his forceful insights, which often challenged orthodox economic assumptions. Among other predictions, he sounded early warnings about the collapse of the American housing market that led to the 2008 financial crisis.”
The off-the-record meeting, held at the downtown offices of Series co-sponsor Meridian Institute, featured a lively discussion among the diplomats, which is a hallmark of the Lugar Diplomacy Series. The series brings together diplomats from developed and developing countries to meet in an intimate setting with American thought leaders in both domestic and international affairs to strengthen diplomatic relationships and to provide diplomats with important insights into the U.S. government and policy. The event was co-sponsored by DuPont.
Previous speakers have included former CIA director Gen. David Petraeus, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, former Senator and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, and Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan.
