Current foreign policy developments, the impact of social media, and the relationship between the media and the Trump administration were among the many topics discussed with NBC News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell at the Lugar Diplomacy Series event on March 7, 2018.

Mrs. Mitchell spoke with more than a dozen diplomats from around the world, reflecting on her time covering foreign affairs during seven presidential administrations. Mitchell, as a journalist, provided unique insight into the role of news media today for the Lugar Diplomacy Series.

Former Senator Richard Lugar, president of The Lugar Center and host of the event, introduced Mrs. Mitchell in his opening remarks, praising her as “familiar to all of us as one of the most trusted and admired journalists in America.” Lugar also noted that “Mitchell has a well-deserved reputation for thoroughness and fairness in her reporting.”

Mrs. Mitchell was the ninth speaker of the Lugar Diplomacy Series, which brings together diplomats from around the world posted to Washington for off-the-record, open, and candid two-way discussions with American thought leaders. Previous speakers have included former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten, Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, U.S. Senator Susan Collins, philanthropist and global agriculture expert Howard Buffett, and CIA and NSA director Michael Hayden.

The meeting with Mrs. Mitchell was held at the Washington offices of Lugar Diplomacy Series co-sponsor Meridian Institute, a nonprofit organization that brings together diverse interests to solve global problems. The event was also cosponsored by DuPont.
